Who is Nicola Sturgeon?
Nicola Sturgeon is the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the fifth First Minister of Scotland.

Childhood and Education
Born on July 19, 1970 in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland, the eldest of three daughters, to dental nurse Joan Kerr Ferguson and electrician Robin Sturgeon, Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon joined the SNP at the age of 16. After being their Youth Affairs as well as Publicity Vice-Convener she became Scotland’s youngest parliamentary candidate when she contested for the 1992 general election in the Glasgow Shettleston constituency (although she lost). Sturgeon went on to graduate from the University of Glasgow that year, with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons), followed by a Diploma in Legal Practice in 1993. While studying law, she was also an active member of the students’ representative council and the Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association.

Early career
Her entry into politics was inspired by Margaret Thatcher, but before that Sturgeon undertook legal training with Glasgow solicitors McClure Naismith in 1995. She soon began working for Stirling city solicitors Bell & Craig followed by a stint at Glasgow’s Drumchapel Law Centre.

Full-fledged politics
In 1999, Sturgeon contested in the first Scottish Parliament election as SNP’s candidate for Glasgow Govan. Despite losing, she became a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP), as she had topped SNP’s regional list for Glasgow. Sturgeon was in the Shadow Cabinets of both First Ministers Alex Salmond and John Swinney during her first term and later became Depute Leader of SNP, apart from leading the party at the Scottish Parliament.

She was made Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing and was retained for the same role after SNP’s landslide victory at the 2011 election. A reshuffle in 2012 saw her appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Cities, alongside charge of the Scottish independence referendum.

Sturgeon was elected First Minister of Scotland in November 2014 and appointed to the Privy Council of the UK along with the title ‘The Right Honourable’. In May 2016, Sturgeon was formally elected for a second term—this time as SNP leader.

Assets
April 2015 onwards, the salary of the First Minister of Scotland was officially decided as £144,687—higher than the Prime Minister’s £142,500 and also the £143,911 salary of the then Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. However, Sturgeon accepted only £135,605—a voluntary pay freeze supporting Alex Salmond’s pledge to keep taking a salary that was decided in 2008-09. Her 2017 salary has now gone up to £151,721.

Current British Prime Minister Theresa May earns £150,402 per annum.

Awards
Winner of the Scottish Politician of the Year Award in 2008, 2012 and 2014 and the Donald Dewar Debater of the Year Award in 2004, 2008 and 2011 (both organised by The Herald), Sturgeon went on to become the most powerful woman in Britain in 2015 (from 20th spot in 2013), according to BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.
Sturgeon also took 50th spot on The Guardian’s list of world leaders, celebrities and entrepreneurs of 2016, the vocal critic of Brexit and SNP leader. Leader of the annual list, German chancellor Angela Merkel, topped for the sixth consecutive year.

Personal life
Sturgeon is married to Peter Murrell, SNP’s current chief executive since 2010. They own a house in Glasgow.
