Swiss court increases jail term for banker

By Spear's

A Basel appeals court has increased the prison sentence handed out to a former banker who broke Swiss banking secrecy laws by handing confidential data to Germany.

A Basel appeals court has increased the prison sentence handed out to a former banker who broke Swiss banking secrecy laws by handing confidential data to Germany. The court sentenced the 38-year-old unidentified man to three months in jail for giving German authorities details of 45 clients.

He passed on the information while in detention in Germany on suspicion of fraud. The identity of the institution he formerly worked for was not disclosed.

Prosecutors lodged an appeal after declaring an original 30-day prison sentence given in November 2007 too lenient. The appeals court said the sentence was increased because of the severity of the man’s crime.
