Our roundup of the Spear’s events calendar this year – from the big winners to the best speeches

The Spear’s Wealth Management Awards were not just notable this year for our range of winners: Philanthropist was Sir Richard Branson, Trusted Adviser Ceris Gardner of Maurice Turnor Gardner and the Lifetime Achievement Award went to Martyn Gowar.

But the ceremony at The Savoy on 27 October also saw the debut of The Spear’s 500 – the world’s first guide to private client professionals across every sector for HNWs and their families. From the top private bankers to art advisers and private jet brokers, it’s a landmark event in its own right and one of our proudest achievements to date.

We also singled out Citi as Private Bank of the Year and JP Morgan’s Giovanni Revedin di San Martino as Private Banker. London’s legal luminaries had their share of the limelight – Mark Stephens CBE of Howard Kennedy was our Defamation andReputation Lawyer of the Year and Withers’ Diana Parker our Family Lawyer. This year we changed the format of our Young Turk Awards, which recognise those 35 or under in a variety of categories: we had four lunches, with two awards and a very special guest speaker at each. Our guest speakers were all inspiring: Jo Malone; Nick Jenkins, founder of Moonpig; Faisel Rahman of Fair Finance; and Lord Flight. You can see photos from each event here.

Literary readers will already know about our Book Awards, showcasing the finest tales and tomes of the year. Awards went to Brad Stone for The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon and Craig Brown for lifetime achievement, among others. (For the full list of Book Awards winners, click here)

Hardly satisfied with awards, we also hosted the Spear’s Wealth Insight Forum in May and November, bringing together movers and shakers from across the private client world for expert views and panel discussions – from wine investing to the survival of family business in the 21st century (you can watch Jeremy Goring of The Goring talk about his here).

We also fed cultured HNWs with a hearty breakfast and food for thought at Masterpiece London, the art, antiques and design fair at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Our panellists debating the masterpiece of Masterpiece were Theo Fennell, David Linley, founder of LINLEY and chairman of Christie’s UK, Loic le Gaillard of Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Chinese art specialist Michael Goedhuis.
