Born on May 19, 1992 in London, Smith was encouraged by his parents to have singing lessons and joined the Youth Music Theatre UK.
In October 2012, electronic music duo Disclosure featured Smith in their number 11 UK single Latch. Smith then released Lay Me Down, his debut album’s lead single in February 2013. He also lent vocals to English DJ and songwriter Naughty Boy’s single La La La (2013), which topped the UK Singles Charts. That year, he released an EP consisting of four tracks: Safe with Me, Nirvana, a solo acoustic version of Latch and a live version of I’ve Told You Now.
In 2014 Smith won the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC’s Sound of 2014.
Smith’s second single Money on My Mind (2014) also topped the UK charts. Capitol Records released Smith’s debut album In the Lonely Hour which reached the top spot in the UK’s Album Charts and ranked second on the Billboard 200. It was 2014’s second bestselling album in the US and the UK.
Smith sang Latch alongside Disclosure on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in January 2014, for his first performance on American TV, then appeared on Saturday Night Live in March 2014 singing his internationally acclaimed third single, Stay with Me.
I’m Not the Only One, the fourth single, ranked third in the UK and fifth in the US and his fifth single Like I Can joined the UK’s top ten.
The British singer recieved four Grammy Awards in 2015, including record and song of the year.
The singer credits the likes of Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin as major influences.
Reports claim Smith’s earnings to be almost £1.3 million per annum.
