When Spear’s catches up with Rachel Bentley – director of the financial services and private client team at PwC – she is in Cape Town. ‘I have been focusing on expanding our private wealth practice in Africa,’ she explains. ‘PwC in the UK has a strategic alliance with our Africa network, and we’re working together to share knowledge and resources.’
Bentley also has a strong US client base, as well as a deep knowledge of UK and Japanese taxation, making her the ideal choice to advise HNWs and UHNWs on cross-border tax and compliance issues.
‘It’s a strategic area of work for us. We’re mainly focused on South Africa and Nigeria, which are the biggest economies in Africa,’ she says. ‘There are so many investment opportunities here. Succession planning is becoming more of an issue, and governments are getting more stable.’
Meanwhile, with the CRS and FATCA adding a layer of complexity to the affairs of many HNWs, more clients are looking to adopt voluntary disclosure programmes. With tax uncertainty in the US and UK, Bentley advises clients ‘to constantly and consistently revisit plans. We are in a world that is ever-changing, and we can’t just look at the tax aspects. We have to take a broader view.’
