Posh social network ASmallWorld 'exiles' untrustworthy members

I have just received the most astonishing email from ASmallWorld, the once-exclusive social network. (It pretty much lost all exclusivity when it let me join.) Because some people ‘undermin[e] the unique spirit of openness that serves as the cornerstone of ASW’, the site is ‘exiling’ them, ‘effective immediately’.

It’s not clear what this abuse of the ‘unique spirit of openness’ is, but one can imagine spamming of the members, perhaps gaining lots of their email addresses and using them to sell them fake Viagra.

I haven’t been on ASmallWorld in years, and not just because I’ve forgotten my password. No, the people on ASW were the most horrendous type of would-be socialites, minor European aristos, kids of the insanely wealthy and assorted international louche layabout playboys.

The idea was that everyone on ASmallWorld was verified by other members, so you knew you could trust them if, say, you landed in Paris and wanted to meet up with some party people, or you found yourself unexpectedly in New York and wanted to know the best place to have a good time.

A hideously self-regarding concoction, ASmallWorld long ago became redundant. You might almost think that being exiled is the best thing that could happen to you.

The full email is below.

Dear Valued Member,

Trust is important to us. How important? Well, as part of our ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of our membership, we have decided to terminate the accounts of anyone who undermines the unique spirit of openness that serves as the cornerstone of ASW—and sets our community apart.

Obviously you are not one of those people! You’re receiving this email because we value your contributions to the community, and we hope you always feel comfortable here at ASW, online and off. The reality is simply that our growth has inadvertently allowed certain members to degrade this trust, and those are the people we’re exiling, effective immediately.

It is our hope that this will help you feel even more at ease in sharing your life with the rest of the ASW community.

Warm Regards and Happy Travels,
The ASW Team
