In September 2009, Jones debuted for Blackburn in the League Cup win against Nottingham Forest followed by an England Under-19 debut in November against Turkey (3–1 win). Soon ensued a new contract for five years in February 2010; laced with a £16 million release clause.

Starting the 2010-11 season strongly, Jones stopped playing after a torn knee cartilage sidelined him in December 2010. He could return only in March 2011 as a substitute in a 2–2 draw against Blackpool and played his first full match only in April — a 0–0 draw against Arsenal.

Jones played his first England Under-21 match in August 2010 and was included for the 2011 Under-21 European Championship, captaining the final group stage match against the Czech Republic in Denmark.

Manchester United then confirmed that they would be signing on Jones for five years with a transfer fee—although undisclosed—estimated to be at least £16.5 million. His United debut came in a 3–1 win over Chicago Fire in a pre-season tour to the USA, while his competitive debut was in the 3–2 win against Manchester City (after being 2–0 down) in the 2011 FA Community Shield. His Premier League debut occurred in the 2–1 win over West Bromwich Albion, a week later.

In October 2011, participating in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers, Jones debuted for the England seniors against Montenegro (a 2–2 draw). Though included in the squad for the main draw, Jones played no more matches in Euro 2012.

Despite a knee operation that prevented him from playing the beginning of season 2012-13, Jones recuperated by November 2012 to play in the UEFA Champions League against Turkey’s Galatasaray.

Included for FIFA World Cup 2014, Jones played the third and final group match against Costa Rica (0–0 draw).

Jones inked a new £120,000-a-week, four-year deal with ManU in July 2015, with an option to extend it by one more year.

His awards playing for Manchester United include a Premier League triumph in 2012-13 and FA Community Shield wins in 2011 and 2013.
