Porsche’s plug-in 918 Spyder

By Spear's

Engineers from Porsche’s race car division designed and developed the hybrid 918 Spyder. The car combines racing speed with low-emission efficiency.

It is a plug-in hybrid that can cover eighteen miles on electric power alone. Charging its battery from a household plug takes up to seven hours. It goes down to two hours when charging from an installable industrial socket.

Porsche has made sure to maintain speed while honing its eco credentials: the 918 Spyder goes from zero to 60mph in 2.8 seconds. But it has the lowest carbon emissions count of all hybrid supercars and is cheaper than the McLaren P1 or LaFerrari with a price tag of £537,000 – no wonder Porsche describes the 918 Spyder as a gene pool for future sport cars.

Engine: 4.6-litre V8 – 606bhp
Electric motor output: 154bhp (hybrid module on rear axle); 127bhp (electric motor on front axle) – 281bhp total
Power (engine + electric): 887bhp
CO2 emissions: 70g/km
Top speed: 211mph
0-62mph: 2.8s
0-124mph: 7.9s
0-186mph: 23s
