Born in Los Angeles, California on August 4, 1981, Markle is the daughter of Doria Ragland, an African-American who is a yoga instructor and therapist, and Emmy Award winning lighting director Thomas W. Markle, who is of Dutch/Irish descent.
During her childhood, Markle spent a lot of time on the sets of the series Married… with Children, which influenced her to take up theatre studies at the Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. She later graduated with a double major in theatre and international studies, in 2003. As part of her studies, she interned at the U.S. embassy of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Earlier, in 2002, she made an appearance in the series General Hospital. Endowed with great handwriting skills, she soon began working as a freelance calligrapher to support herself while simultaneously pursuing an acting career. Her calligraphic talent got her a contract with Dolce & Gabbana.
After some modeling and acting stints, Markle landed the role of Amy Jessup in the sci-fi series Fringe (2009, first two episodes of Season Two). In 2011, she began playing the role of Rachel Zane, one of the main characters, on the series Suits.
Other TV series she has appeared in include: Century City (2004), Cuts (2005), Love, Inc. (2005), 1 vs. 100 (2006), The War at Home (2006), CSI: NY (2006), Deceit (2006), Deal or No Deal (2007), 90210 (2008), ‘Til Death (2008), Knight Rider (2009), Without a Trace (2009), The League (2009), CSI: Miami (2010) and Castle (2012).
Her film ventures comprise appearances in A Lot Like Love (2005), The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down (2010, TV film), Get Him to the Greek (2010), Remember Me (2010), Horrible Bosses (2011), The Candidate (2012, short film), When Sparks Fly (2014, TV movie), Anti-Social (2015) and Dater’s Handbook (2016, TV movie).
Markle launched the lifestyle website “for the discerning palate” called The Tig (Tignanello, the Italian red wine) in 2014, but closed it down in 2017.
In 2016, she hooked up with Canadian garment firm Reitmans to launch a line of affordable women’s office apparel.
A humanitarian, Markle is hugely involved with charities, such as One Young World, of which she was a counselor. In 2016, she travelled to Rwanda as Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, was a United Nations Women’s advocate for political participation and leadership and also worked with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
Markle, who was earlier married to film producer Trevor Engelson (2011-2013), is now in a relationship with 33-year-old Prince Harry, second son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana since 2016. Both met in Toronto, where she was working on the sets of Suits and the Prince was organising the Invictus Games (to be held in Toronto, in September 2017).
