‘I’m a geek,’ says Katharine Landells. ‘I love the technical aspect of my job and the human aspect of the job and how they come together.’
This love of detail, together with an ability to empathise with her clients, has led to a thriving practice: ‘My clients are my currency and their faith in me is my practice. I really pride myself on the relationships I build with clients, from the big to the small matters.’
Over the past year, Landells has been occupied with the monumental case of X v X, a highly contested case with high-profile clients and a complex trust aspect. She’s no stranger to big trust cases (she also acted on the legendary Charman v Charman) and has argued in her time for both the inviolability of a trust and the need to breach. These intellectual skills are always deployed for the same goal: ‘I aim to unpick the marriage with dignity and elegance and to help the children.’
Landells values a balanced working life — an attitude that has led to a very varied experience. There’s an indefatigability about her, so it’s no surprise to find that outside the law she busies herself with climbing mountains. ‘When you’re used to sitting at your desk all day, climbing a mountain helps you with your metaphorical perspective. It’s your job to have that; you have to keep it real,’ she says.
