With the sixth generation of his family now firmly at the helm of fine jewellers Boodles, Michael Wainwright knows first-hand what is needed to drive a family business forward. Having taken over the company from his father in the eighties, Wainwright, now Managing Director, along with his brother Nicholas, has molded Boodles into a leading retailer in bespoke jewellery.
Wainwright says; “It's like a marriage of course, I'm sure I annoy them, but you know, you've got to get over it.
“We get on very well. And on the incompetence side, I hope we're not that, but you wouldn't last long in this business if you were.”
Wainwright tells of how the once 'rather dilapidated' jeweller/watchmaker in Liverpool known as Boodles and Dunthorne, has evolved into the thriving business he manages today.
Along with nine stores in the UK, Boodles also sponsors the annual tennis event; the Boodles Tournament, which Wainwright says is a highlight every year.
“It's a beautiful environment, it's like a garden party with some world class tennis thrown in, he exclaims.
“And if you like tennis you can get as close as I am to the camera, to the players.”
This year The Boodles tournament runs from June 17 – June 21, with Novak Djokovic, Milos Raonic and John Isner set to take to the court.
