One of London’s secret property power players, Withers’ residential property head focuses on prime transactions for HNWs and institutions, particularly tax and structuring advice. He also has in-depth multi-jurisdictional expertise on overseas purchases, funding and complex holding structures.
He’s noticed an ‘interesting’ uptick in UK buyers of late, and far fewer from Russia. ‘[Clients] may be buying in the UK or the west coast of the US or somewhere in Australia. Being able to co-ordinate that, to know something about it and how to get the information about the different tax rates and costs of acquisitions is very important to them,’ he says.
He’s even advised on islands off Papua New Guinea. ‘It’s a slightly oddball thing that private clients come up with — because they’ve been there, they’ve loved it and they want a part of it,’ he has previously told Spear’s.
The head of the residential team since 2002, Stuart began his career at May, May & Merrimans before joining Withers in 1987. Clients praise his accurate, timely, and easy-to-understand advice as ‘ordered, very precise, in my interest and analytical’.
A member of the Solicitors’ Wine Society, he is an avid squash player and cyclist.
