Styles auditioned for The X Factor in 2010 as a solo candidate. After failing to progress to the 'Boys' category at the 'judges' houses' alongside all the other band mates, Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger made the decision to put them together as a five piece boy band.

The band grew in popularity and came in third place on The X Factor. Shortly afterwards it was announced that they had been signed by Cowell to a reported £2 million Syco Records contract.

After completing The X Factor Live Tour in 2011, the group released their debut album, Up All Night. The album received positive reviews from critics and was an international success, topping the charts in sixteen different countries. By December 2012 over 4.5 million copies had been sold worldwide.

In December 2011 Styles embarked on his first solo tour with his One Direction band mates. The tour was a huge commercial success, with tickets selling out within minutes.

Their second album, Take Me Home, followed a year later in 2012. Once again it received a positive response, selling 4.4 million copies and topping the charts in 35 different countries. It became the fourth best-selling album of 2012.

One Direction embarked on their second tour in February 2013. In Australia and New Zealand alone, tickets grossed $15.7million.

In 2013 One Direction: This Is Us, a 3D documentary and concert movie was released featuring the single Best Song Ever. The film was a box office hit, grossing $60million worldwide, becoming the fourth highest grossing concert movie.

The third studio album - Midnight Memories - was released during November 2013. It reached number one in over ninety countries worldwide.

Styles and his band mates regularly donate towards charitable causes. In 2013 One Direction released a cover version of One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks) as the 2013 Comic Relief single. They also travelled to Ghana to volunteer at a children's hospital.

During the same year the band announced a partnership with Office Depot where they created a limited edition capsule collection of back to school supplies. They also confirmed that a portion of the proceeds would go towards an anti-bullying educational programme. The campaign raised over £1million.

Styles and his band mates announced that they plan to donate £200,000 of their first stadium tour - Where We Are - to the Stand Up to Cancer charity.

Styles owns two homes, a £2.5 million house in LA and a £3 million house in Hampstead, North London. He also owns a classic mid-1990s Porsche 911, a Ford Capri, an Audi R8, A Jaguar E-type, a Ferrari California and a Range Rover Sport.
