Born Edward John Frank Howe on November 29, 1977, in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, Eddie Howe was raised in Verwood, Dorset by his mum Anne Howe and began playing football with local teams Rossgarth and Parley Sports.

He joined Bournemouth at 16, and made his professional first-team debut against Hull City (December 1995). A vital centre-back, he soon represented the England Under-21 team in the Toulon Tournament (1998).

Howe then landed in Portsmouth on a £400,000 deal (March 2002), but a knee injury relegated him to the dugout at ‘Pompey’. After regaining full fitness (January 2004), he was loaned out to Swindon Town, where he ended up warming the bench. (BBC, Daily Echo & The News)

Lent back to Bournemouth for season 2004-05, Howe’s good form there prompted the supporters of the financially poor club to create a transfer fund called “Eddieshare” for their favourite son to get the defender transferred to Bournemouth permanently. Eddieshare raised £21,000, facilitating the requisite transfer. (Telegraph)

In December 2006, Howe was made player-coach by manager Kevin Bond and given the responsibility of coaching Bournemouth’s reserve team.  In the summer of 2007, after over 270 appearances, his bad knee forced him to retire as a player for the first team, making him jump into full-time coaching. After Bond’s sacking in September 2008, Howe too had to quit the club.

However, Howe came back as the youth coach for Bournemouth under manager Jimmy Quinn and after Quinn was sacked on New Year’s Eve 2008, he became the caretaker manager and soon the permanent manager (Football League’s youngest manager at the time) in January 2009. Despite a 17-point deficit that season, Howe managed to keep “the cherries” from being relegated, and in 2009-10 got Bournemouth promoted into League One, riding on the wave of eight victories from nine games (a club record).

Howe’s salary was fixed at £750,000 a year at Bournemouth. While at Burnley, Howe guided the team to eighth place (2010-11) and 13th place (2011-12) in the Championship. Back to managing Bournemouth, Howe steered the club to three league wins and an FA Cup triumph before going on to win the League One Manager of the Month twice (November 2012 and April 2013). He also got Bournemouth promoted to the Championship in April 2013, finishing runners-up. In season 2013-14 of the Championship, Howe steered the team to 10th position.

Howe then guided Bournemouth to a Football League Championship triumph in 2014-15, while also securing promotion for them into the Premier League in May 2015 (the first time in club history). The season also saw him win Football League Championship Manager of the Month twice (October 2014 and March 2015).

He was awarded Manager of the Decade at the Football League Awards in April 2015.

Other awards include: League Managers Association (LMA) Manager of the Year (2015), LMA Championship Manager of the Year (2014-15) and Manager of the Month in the Premier League (March 2017).
