‘It was a bit of a baptism by fire – the financial crisis quickly unrolled,’ says approachable and engaging investment manager Cordelia Bowdery, describing how her career started in 2007 with Killik & Co.
Now at Veritas, she says she learnt ‘an awful lot’ from her beginnings at the Mayfair stockbroker: ‘One, in terms of markets, but also in terms of looking after clients – the worst thing you can do in a financial crisis is bury your head in the sand. It’s important to pick up the phone. Even if you’re delivering bad news, at least they know what’s going on.’
Seeking a ‘bottom up’ knowledge of investments, she joined Rothschild as an assistant portfolio manager in 2010 and became a client adviser in 2011. She’s learnt a lot since: ‘I think clients are often intimidated by their financial advisers, because they don’t always understand what they’re saying. It’s so important that you’re looking around and making sure everyone understands… If you lose anyone, you need to pick up on that.’
Praised by industry experts for her ‘extraordinary quality of work and communications style’, she’s a keen theatre-goer and regular on London’s pop-up food scene, who happens to have a degree in philosophy and theology from Oxford: ‘Obviously a fantastic help for a career in finance,’ she laughs.
Bowdery won Spear’s Future Leader in Wealth Management award in 2017, and was included in PAM’s top 40 under 40 in 2016.
