Bill Murray is worth an estimated £96 million.

Born to a mail room clerk and lumber salesman in 1950, Bill Murray was raised alongside eight siblings in Illinois. After he lost his father at the age of 17, Murray worked as a golf caddy to support his education.

As an adolescent, Murray was a voracious reader of biographies of American heroes, which inspired him to make his mark in Hollywood.

However, until the mid 1970s, he hadn’t found a platform to showcase his talent. Discontinuing his pre-medical course from Regis University, Murray first got an opportunity to tickle the ribs of the public in 1975, with ABC variety show Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell.

He first appeared on celluloid in the 1979 flick Meatballs, followed by the 1980s movie Where the Buffalo Roam.

In 1980, he retraced his comedic roots with the cult classic Caddyshack. His successful comedy run continued with the army farce Stripes in 1981, Tootsie in 1982, and Ghostbusters in 1984, which turned out to be the decade’s biggest hit, spawning a cartoon series, action figures and even a chart-topping theme song.

Considered a living legend, Bill Murray then starred and co-wrote the film adaptation of the W. Somerset Maugham novel The Razor’s Edge. The film bombed and Murray stayed away from the movie business for the next four years. He next appeared onscreen in Scrooged in 1988, followed by Ghostbusters II in 1989, What About Bob?, and Groundhog Day, released in 1991 and ’93 respectively, which all became major box office hits.

One of Murray’s finest roles was in Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, in which he played a business tycoon competing with an eccentric 15-year-old for the affections of a first grade teacher. The movie fetched him Best Supporting Actor awards from both the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. In 2004, Murray received an Oscar nomination for his starring role in Sofia Coppola’s indie hit Lost in Translation and also starred in Jim Jarmusch’s Broken Flowers (2005).

He is a partner along with his siblings in Murray Bros. Caddy Shack, a restaurant in Northeast Florida. Murray is also a part-owner of the St. Paul Saints minor-league baseball team and an avid golfer who often plays in celebrity tournaments.

Murray, who has six children with two ex-wives, currently lives in New York. He has homes in Los Angeles, Massachusetts and South Carolina.

More recently, Murray earned accolades for his portrayal of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 2012 film Hyde Park on Hudson.
