Top Ten Family Lawyers

Fiona Shackleton is regarded as one of the best family lawyers of her generation, but one peer is prepared to go further, calling her ‘one of the leading family lawyers of all time’. About anyone else this might sound like hyperbole, but not Shackleton. She alone among those in this list is not only known for representing celebrities but is a celebrity in her own right. But for all the glitz that accompanies the ‘Steel Magnolia’, as she has become known, her reputation hinges on technical skill and imagination. She ‘has outstanding judgement and flair and cuts to the chase’, says another observer.

In 2010, Shackleton was made a life peer as Baroness Shackleton of Belgravia in the City of Westminster, but her life in the House of Lords has not diminished her profile as a practitioner of the highest calibre. Another contemporary says of her: ‘Fiona is someone to trust. She is exceptionally personable, and will treat everybody equally from one of her celebrity clients to the interns. She is known for her thoughtfulness and kindness.’

Her client list includes an impressive array of royals and big names. She represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana; Sir Paul McCartney in his proceedings with Heather Mills; Madonna in her divorce from Guy Ritchie; Liam Gallagher in his divorce from Nicole Appleton; and David Walliams in proceedings with Lara Stone. Shackleton declined to comment for this profile.
