A private client tax partner at Smith & Williamson’s family office services division, Andrew Lockwood tells Spear’s: ‘I have a wide client base that ensures a constant variety of taxation issues and strategic challenges, including the issues and concerns facing owners of traditional landed estates spread around the country.’
Around 80 per cent of Lockwood’s clients are UK-based, but he also advises onshore and offshore trusts in relation to corporate reorganisation and a range of tax-efficient structures. ‘We have been successfully implementing strategies to manage tax and advise on exposure to corporate tax,’ he says.
Lockwood takes a collaborative approach on behalf of clients, often working with their lawyers and land agents to provide tax solutions: ‘We follow a number of tried and tested strategies, making use of a range of structures to plan accordingly’.
Has political volatility altered his clients’ outlook? ‘Most of our clients are looking at Brexit scenarios, and are planning for reductions in income levels,’ he says. ‘We’ve got historically very low interest rates and a client base with assets that banks are comfortable lending against.’
Lockwood observes that many clients hold immobile assets, but he also states that ‘keeping flexibility in place is key’. All in all, this is a thoughtful and experienced practitioner.
