Abarth’s all new 124 Spider will rev up your road trips

By Spear's

Abarth has been creating small but powerful performance cars since the 1940s – and the new 124 Spider is no exception; adrenaline-fuelled open top driving at it’s best.

Back in 1972 the Officine Abarth created the first Abarth 124 Spider. Over 40 years later, Abarth has now developed a new roadster based on the classic lines of the original, but with exceptional 21st century levels of power, performance and style. The revered spider badge has returned and the new model will surely serve to delight Abarth’s understandably fanatical followers.

The cockpit of the Spider is a racing control centre – leather seats combine with a highly technical drive mode selector and the trademark Abarth stamped steering wheel. The spider is available with or without a matt black bonnet and boot lid and its manual soft-top can be opened in just three seconds, so whatever the weather you can enjoy the style and power of the spider.

Beneath the sleek bonnet and behind the car’s stylish honeycomb front grill, lies a technical powerhouse. Sporting rear-wheel drive, a powerful 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo 170hp engine and double wishbone suspension, the new spider is a real driver’s car. The low, snug seating position will make sure you are connected to the road, as many an Abarth racing driver has been before you. To feed the senses further the ‘Italian belcanto’ Record Monza exhaust, issued as standard, will ensure that your ride is accompanied by the signature Abarth roar. Excitement, acceleration and power can be at your fingertips, while your head is in the clouds.

The car’s transmission has been developed in conjunction with the Abarth Racing Corse Team; this car is engineered with real life racing experience in mind – it is fun, but technically serious. As you sit in your beautifully crafted racing seat, you are sure to feel how both the sport and multilink suspensions, and the lightweight body design, connect you to the road and make the car incredibly agile.

The all new Abarth 124 Spider also sets a new benchmark from a technical perspective. It has a curb weight of only 1,060 kg and a weight-to-power ratio of just 6.2 kg/HP. The weight is concentrated within the wheelbase for optimum weight distribution, thus ensuring unique levels of performance and agility. The spider also offers exceptional handling thanks to the superior suspension.

But this car is not all about power and style; the team at Abarth have been at pains to ensure that your driving experience is pleasurable. The 124 Spider has a specially designed adaptive headlight system, which includes auto-levelling, headlight washers, rain-sensitive wipers and rear-parking sensors. For those who also enjoy their audio entertainment, you can add a high-definition Bose sound system, boasting nine speakers (four of which are neatly embedded in the headrests).

But get a move on. In order to ensure that your car is unique, make sure you secure one of the first release vehicles. The first 2500 cars will be special numbered editions.

As the legendary racing-car designer and driver, Carlo Abarth said: ‘Motors, machines, motor-racing, love of cars, passion for speed, it is the obsession – the very beautiful and mad obsession which has reached the whole of humanity, which has made us the ardent admirers of what goes faster and what is more mechanically pure.’
