The Naka Island, Thailand

By Spear's

The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa Phuket, is located on its own private island just off the coast of Phuket, a mere 25 minutes from the international airport.
Naka can only be accessed by its own private speedboat, so the minute you arrive you are indeed in a world of your own, surrounded by the calm, turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea and with unforgettable views of Phang Nga Bay including Ko Tapu — for ever known as James Bond island since it was used as a location for The Man with the Golden Gun.
This part of Phuket has the most dramatic coastline with its islands and limestone outcrops, around which small fishing boats ply their trade and elegant long-tail boats ferry visitors and sightseers. While there is much to see and explore on Phuket itself or by boat to the surrounding islands, many guests find they never want to leave their tiny paradise — it is but 2.5sq km in total. However, should guests want to venture out, the resort’s own luxury concierge can organize special cultural tours, fishing trips or shopping days. Then there is Spa Naka, a five-star sanctuary that concentrates on wellbeing, body and beauty treatments as well as inner peace.
Built along the lines of a traditional Thai village, it houses eight treatment suites, including four for couples — each with its plunge pool and outdoor rainforest shower — and four for singles — each with a steam room.

WHO
It’s a very grown-up resort, although there are new activities for children. This is ideal for couples and groups of friends and families, which is why it is very popular for weddings. Its remote and romantic appearance also makes it ideal for honeymoons.

WHEN
The island has a tropical monsoon climate and is warm all year round. The hottest months are April, May, September and October — with the last two the wettest. High season is November to March.

HAVE
Choose from a comprehensive menu of scrubs and massages, rituals and bathing experiences, as well as mud wraps, herbal pouch massages a honey mango body polish as well as a jet-lag treatment and a collagen mask that helps to restore moisture to the skin.
Also on offer are a number of three-hour Spa Naka ‘journeys’, which are custom-designed for each individual and include therapies that steam, scrub, sculpt and nourish, while the Thai Temptation version also includes a Secret Thai Facial. Should you prefer not to leave the luxury of your villa, then a number of treatments and bathing rituals are also available in situ.

DO
Guests can be spoilt for choice with the range of activities available. At sea there are snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and windsurfing, on land any number of hiking or cycling tours, and should you decide to remain at the resort, you will not be bored. As well as the large freshwater swimming pool there is a fitness centre and yoga and Pilates studio offering a number of classes, including stretching and Thai boxing. If you opt for just one excursion, try a boat trip around the wonders of the Phuket coast and its neighboring islands, awe-inspiring in their beauty.

BEST
Spa Naka has its own Watsu pool, where you can enjoy the most relaxing, therapeutic massage possible. You are in the pool, with little floats on your ankles and wrists, while the rest of your weight is supported by the water. The therapist then manipulates your limbs and muscles against the pressure of the water, which gives a much more intense workout. It’s like an underwater shiatsu — and totally coma-inducing. You will sleep like a baby afterwards while your limbs feel like jelly.
