The Players, The Parties
Spear's Birthday I
On a night as cold as sin, in a club the glamour of which suggested sin, Spear's brought its staff and some of its closest friends together for a fourth birthday celebration. In truth, we'd like to forget our age - who wouldn't? - but it at least provides cover for a party.
Mortons on the north side of Berkeley Square has recently relaunched, and a good number of Spear's readers have supported it by becoming founder members, so it seemed only right that we celebrate here. The private dining room on the first floor has a gigantic Howard Hodgkin looming, faced by some Julian Opies, and the ambience was animated, society gals exchanging gossip with banking supremos.
(Plus, we were curious about the food: club food is so often - even in the newer establishments - of the boiled chicken variety. Happy to report, the risotto, rack of lamb and plate of desserts were Michelin-quality.)
Our guests included Sir Rocco Forte, the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, Michel de Carvalho, Letitia Cash, Cordelia Nevill, Amber Nuttall, Duncan Macintyre, Rupert Phelps, Godfrey Barker, Brian Williamson, Bruce Weatherill and Simon Davis.
Herewith, the pictures, taken by Spear's favourite photog, Tim Griffiths. Gallery II is here.

Q
Is it really possible to avoid stamp duty land tax when purchasing land and property?
A
A lot has been made recently in the press about buyers of some of the UK’s most expensive homes avoiding stamp duty land tax (SDLT) by purchasing their home through a company.
