With categories from men’s bespoke tailors to flawless jewellers, the Spear’s Design for Living Awards go to the people, places or things that through sheer excellence make our life that much more worth living.

Winners included: Great Interiors: Nicky Haslam; Outstanding Contribution to British Craft: David Linley; Golden Dish: Brett Graham, The Ledbury; The Precious – High Jewellery: Solange Azagury-Partridge; The Precious – Contemporary: Stephen Webster; The Brummell – Contemporary Classic: Dunhill.

The Design for Living Award winners, identified as the very best in their field, were selected by a distinguished panel of leading designers, industry insiders and authoritative style writers.

The judges included: Nick Foulkes; Manfredi della Gherardesca; Ivan Lindsay; Victoria Tryon; Clive Aslet; Nick Candy; Gus Hochschild; William Sitwell; Oliver Thring; Andrew della Casa; Caroline Phillips; John Arlidge; William Cash; Abigail Rainer, Harrods; Anthony Haden-Guest; Alessandro Tomé; and Josh Spero.

Our quest has ranged from some of the world’s greatest architects today, operating in sleek skyscrapers in New York and Singapore, to the smallest artisans and craftsmen, operating from tiny converted barn studios or sheds in the English shires. We have looked at the extraordinary and the everyday, we have examined the wonderfully superfluous and the absolutely necessary.

Our only criterion was that a Spear’s Design for Living Award must go to people, places or things that through their sheer excellence make our life more individual – more our own – and that much more worth living. Tonight we celebrate the beautiful and the bold – from polished nickel taps so stylish you dare not turn them on, to wine glasses so heavy and elegant that you are just as happy to stare at them as drink from them.

Why did we give these awards tonight? In a world where the word ‘luxury’ has become so ubiquitous that it has become almost démodé, we wanted to celebrate what still remains extra special, beautiful, unique and instantly classic.

350 guests, ranging from financiers to fashion designers, were welcomed at the iconic car showroom with champagne from Taittinger and cocktails from Purity Vodka.

Q

In this new anti-tax-avoidance era, when so many tax reliefs have been withdrawn, I've heard that investing in a Business Property Renovation Allowance scheme is one of the few remaining good opportunities for maxing your tax position. Is it true that you can get up to 100 per cent tax relief on the amount invested? And what exactly are these schemes? How do they work? What are the upsides? Downsides?

A

In this climate, it is a relief to see one potentially attractive tax allowance come through unscathed from recent criticism
